- New Zealand was the first country in the world to grant women the right to vote in parliamentary elections in 1893
- Georgina Beyer, became the first transsexual mayor in the world when she became the Mayor of Carterton in 1995. In the 1999 election, she became the world's first transsexual MP. She retired from Parliamentary politics on February 14, 2007
- Civil unions for gays and lesbians have been legal since 2004
- Property rights and next of kin rights are available to same sex couples
- New Zealand has strong anti-discrimination laws
- Gays and Lesbians are protected under the New Zealand Human Rights Legislation of 1993
- Homosexual acts are legal for gay men and lesbians over the age of 16 since 1987
- New Zealand was the first country in the Southern Hemisphere to legalise same sex civil unions
- The New Zealand Parliament has 5 out gay or lesbian MPs and there are 2 out gay MInisters in the Cabinet
- New Zealand is the only country in the Southern Hemisphere with out gay elected members of parliament
- New Zealand has an excellent social climate for gay and lesbian travelers
