Air New Zealand wishes to advise that due to heightened security measures introduced by Aviation Authorities, restrictions are in place on certain items that are not permitted to be carried as part of a customer's cabin baggage.
To avoid any possible inconvenience to our customers, it is important certain items are packed in your checked in baggage. Should a customer try to carry these types of items in their cabin baggage or on their person, the airport screening services will remove them and regrettably such items will not be able to be returned to the customer.
Prohibited Items:
Items prohibited on board aircraft, in your cabin baggage or on your person, include:
- Sharp objects or cutting implements including (but not limited to): knives, box cutters, letter openers, scissors, tradesman's tools, screwdrivers and darts
- Sporting goods or club like items including (but not limited to): baseball bats, pool cues, golf clubs, lacrosse sticks, ski poles, brass knuckles, hammers, boomerangs and didgeridoos

The measures are:
- All liquids, pastes, aerosols or gels such as drinks, creams, perfumes, sprays, gels, toothpaste, lip gloss and mascaras must be in individual containers not greater than 100ml in volume

The contents of the plastic bag must fit comfortably and the bag sealed. Each passenger may carry only one such bag of liquids.
The bag must be presented for examination at the airport security points.

Duty Free
You may take on board liquid items of any size that are purchased after the security check in the Departure lounge (sometimes referred to as 'Airside'), including flights to the US (however retain receipts and ensure container lids remain secured including water /other drink bottles). Most duty free or similar purchases will be given to you in a special sealed bag. Do not open this bag until you have reached your final destination. You should also retain your proof of purchase throughout your journey. You will be required to show it at all transfer points.
If your journey involves changing flights at any EU airport, special restrictions apply. You may only take duty free liquid purchases through the security check point at your connecting airport if they have been purchased at another EU airport, or on board an aircraft operated by an EU carrier. You will need to show proof of purchase to demonstrate this. Purchases from other airports or on board other airlines may only be carried as hold baggage on the connecting flight.
The member states of the European Union are:
Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom
Passengers travelling direct to their final international destination
Passengers travelling to an international destination who are not transiting, transferring or connecting to another flight can purchase Duty Free liquids in excess of 100ml (3oz) from New Zealand once they have passed through the security screening point (after Immigration).
Passengers transiting or transferring at Australia, San Francisco, London, Hong Kong, Japan and the Pacific Islands
Passengers who are transiting via these destinations are advised against purchasing any Duty Free liquids in excess of 100ml (3oz) from New Zealand. Duty Free may be able to be purchased on arrival at their final destination, should the final destination airport have Duty Free stores accessible.
Passengers transiting at Los Angeles
All passengers transiting at Los Angeles should only purchase Duty Free liquids in excess of 100mls (3oz) from New Zealand if they remain in the sterile area during transit. Customers with Duty Free liquids who wish to pass through Customs and Immigration at Los Angeles (e.g. to access our Los Angeles Koru Lounge) will have their Duty Free liquids pastes and gels confiscated at the Los Angeles transit security screening point.
Important information tor transiting within New Zealand
Passengers travelling on flight NZ0303 from Auckland to Christchurch
NZ0303 departs from Auckland's International Terminal (not the Domestic Terminal) so on arrival you will need to make your way to the International Transfers door at the terminal end of the arrivals concourse. You will not collect your baggage or clear customs until you arrive in Christchurch. You will be subject to security screening at Auckland International Airport and must comply with security regulations including the carriage of liquids, gels and aerosols (LAGs). To avoid confiscation of any LAGs, do not carry/purchase any Duty Free liquids over 100mls until after you have passed through this screening point.
Passengers travelling on flight NZ0302 from Christchurch to Auckland and further
Please check in for your connecting flight from Christchurch to Auckland at the international counters at Christchurch airport. While in Auckland you will be in international transit so make your way on arrival to the International Transfers door at the terminal end of the arrivals concourse. You will be subject to security screening at Auckland International Airport and must comply with security regulations including the carriage of liquids, gels and aerosols (LAGs). To avoid confiscation of any LAGs, do not carry/purchase any Duty Free liquids over 100mils until after you have passed through this screening point.
Medicines and Baby Food
Essential medicines and baby food may be permitted in larger quantities above the 100ml limit, but will be subject to the authentication that is already currently required. Any baby milk, sterilised water or liquid food must be tasted by the passenger to verify it's authentic. Essential medication over 100mls needs to be verified at the airport chemist. Air New Zealand recommends this is arranged prior to check-in to avoid unnecessary delays.
In respect of any medication a customer may be carrying in their cabin baggage or on their person, it is important that the medication has a professionally printed label identifying the medication or manufacturers name or pharmaceutical label affixed. Diabetes related supplies/equipment may be carried, however they will be inspected to ensure prohibited items are not concealed. Customers are advised to carry a letter from their Doctor verifying the need for any medical items to be carried, as some countries require such a letter to be presented.
Should you have any questions in relation to restricted items please contact your nearest Air New Zealand Travelcentre or Air New Zealand Reservations office.
Preparing for your journey
Passengers are asked to bear in mind the following advice to help make their passage through the airport as efficient and comfortable as possible:
Before you arrive at the airport:
- Limit quantities to what you may need in the cabin for the duration of the flight
- When possible, put liquids in hold baggage.
- Prepare the re-sealable bag of liquids before arriving at the airport
- Check any queries you have with your airport or airline before travelling to the airport
- To help progress through search points, passengers are advised not to include items capable of containing liquids (e.g. bottles, flasks, tubes, cans, plastic containers etc.) in their cabin baggage
Advice for all passengers travelling to the USA.
There are new US Entry & Transit Requirements that must be complied with to enable you to board flight to the USA.
From 26 December 2009, additional security measures have been put into place for all flights going to/via the USA.
This includes extra screening of passengers and hand baggage at the gate immediately before boarding.
In order to minimise delays and congestion, we are asking all passengers to arrive at the gate early. Secondary security screening starts 2 hrs prior to departure.
A reminder that only one item of hand baggage is permitted for all passengers flying into or transiting through all US airports. This item should not exceed 23 x 36 x 56cm, (approx 9 x 14 x 22 inches) and 15lb/7kg in weight, and should only contain the items you need during the flight, as it will likely be physically searched. Also, please be reminded of the current restrictions on Liquids, Gels and Aerosols.
Hand baggage allowances on all other routes remain unchanged.
At the security point
- Be ready to hand over your re-sealable bag of liquids for screening as you approach the security check point. It will be screened at the same time as your cabin luggage.
- All coats and jackets will have to be removed ready to be screened and metal items including wallets will be placed in plastic trays and scanned separately.
- If you are carrying a Laptop or any other large electrical item within your cabin luggage then please have it ready for separate screening as you approach the security check.
- Be aware that if travelling to the USA you will be subjected to secondary screening before boarding the aircraft
